2nd Workshop: Networking for Future Strategy

The 2^nd European Workshop titled “Urban Heat Island and Heat Resilience: Networking for Future Strategy” was held online in October 2020 for the participants’ safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop had as a central aim the scientific discussion about the problem of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) and its consequences for human health. The total number of participants exceeded that of 170. The participants had the opportunity to be informed on issues related to the subject of the workshop by representatives of various bodies from Greece and the European Union. The Workshop was attended by representatives from universities and research institutes, local authorities, non-governmental organizations and private companies from 10 countries (Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Spain, China, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium).

Apart from distinguished guest speakers who gave presentations on their scientific subject, results of LIFE ASTI and other research projects were presented. By extensively discussing the problem of the UHI and its impact on human health, the issue’s importance for urban societies was highlighted. Its management by the relevant local bodies was underlined by the large participation of local and regional government units from various EU countries and beyond.

Τalking about the atmosphere on Earth on "Newton" broadcast in RaiPlay

What is the Earth's atmosphere and how does it work? Giampietro Casasanta, researcher at LIFE ASTI partner ISAC-CNR- Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate helps us to find the answer. The researcher spent a year in Antarctica in order to study and analyze all those phenomena that involve our well-being and health. The journalist Davide Coero Borga is interviewing Giampietro Casasanta.

CUTLER: Introducing an innovative platform for monitoring coastal urban development

An innovative platform that helps policy makers to easily design, implement and monitor urban development policies for coastal cities has been introduced by the European project “CUTLER - Coastal Urban Development through the Lenses of Resiliency”. The Municipality of Thessaloniki in the framework of the implementation of its strategic and Operational Planning and its Urban Resiliency Strategy is a key partner in a series of related projects among them CUTLER and LIFE ASTI. The project “CUTLER - Coastal Urban Development through the Lenses of Resiliency” funded under the Horizon 2020 Programme, has a total budget of 5,080,125.00 €, and involves sixteen partners from Greece, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Finland, Ireland and Italy. CUTLER aims to establish a sustainable solution for incorporating big data and data science in the policy-making process of pubic administrations.

CLIMPACT - National Network for Climate Change

Project CLIMPACT-National Network for Climate Change consists of 11 emblematic national scientific entities with National Observatory of Greece as coordinating beneficiary. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participates in Pillar 2 that assesses the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of climate change in Greece, and the connection of its impacts on national economy. CLIMPACT network targets to the creation of an interdisciplinary consortium that will unify and optimize the current climate services and early warning systems for natural disasters connected to climate change, including observational networks from various national infrastructures across the country. CLIMPACT also aims to its establishment as a recognized, scientific interlocutor, equivalent to similar networks in other countries, with the ability to contribute with its expertise to decision making not only to climate change mitigation on international level, but to research areas connected to climate change.

It is worth mentioning that one of the final targets of CLIMPACT initiative is to establish a national Virtual Institute for Climate Change, which will promote a permanent networking between scientists and entities, and a platform that will collect and provide climate data.

The LIFE ASTI (Implementation of a forecAstingSystem for urban heaT Island effect for the development of urban adaptation strategies) project focuses on addressing the impact of the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) on human mortality, by developing and evaluating a system of numerical models that will lead to the short-term forecasting and future projection of the UHIE phenomenon in two Mediterranean cities: Thessaloniki and Rome.The project is co-funded by the LIFE 2014-2020 Programme, with a 36-month implementation period.

Project Partners

The LIFE ASTI partnership has established networks at the EU level, including Institutions, Organisations, Municipalities and other local/regional authorities. All partners have been involved in previous and current EU projects and are fully committed to the successful implementation of the Project.
